BOB DESENA - Going Latin On Jazz St. (Discos Dos Coronas)
Bandleader/multi-instrumentalist Bob DeSena is back with his unique, cool West Coast Latin Jazz sounds, offering a repertoire of ten original scores ranging from tasty mambos like the opener Isla Mujeres to romantic ballads such as Just Us and Yvonne, Mi Amor (dedicated to his wife). But it doesn't stop there. DeSena and cohorts take on the challenge of interpreting a beautiful original danzon titled Una Vez En El Pasado (One Time in the Past) showcasing the collective versatility of the group. DeSena shines on the vibes on the cool and sassy Bobby's Chambo, reminiscing about the good old Tjader sound of yesteryear. On the selection Moroccan Mambo he switches to the marimba, accompanied by Jon Griffin on the tres guitar and ancient Egyptian vocal inspirations delivered by Heather Douglas, creating an illusionist world music mood. The party comes to an end with the closing track Descarga (Jam Session), allowing everyone to stretch and have some fun. (GR)
